CIRCLE OF CORNELIS VAN POELENBURGH

ROLLING LANDSCAPE WITH SHEPHERDS AND CATTLE

signed or inscribed with monogram lower left: CPF

oil on copper

copper: 8 by 10¼ in.; 20.2 by 26 cm.

framed: 14 by 16¼ in.; 35.6 by 41 cm.

The copper plate is stable, with a very faint bend that runs vertically through the center and in the lower left corner. The surface is slightly dirty, though the image reads clearly beneath a dulled varnish. Some slight losses to the paint surface at the extreme edges, but otherwise the painting is in overall good and stable condition, with much of the paint layer well preserved. Inspection under UV reveals areas of retouching in the lower left and lower right corners. There is loose, brushy strokes in the upper sky, in the distant landscape and a few scattered spots here and there in the lower background. The area around the monogram appears to have a thicker varnish, to enhance or bring out the monogram, that fluoresces under UV. The panting is ready to hang. Offered in a faux-tortoiseshell frame.
