PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN, BUST LENGTH, WEARING A RUFF; PORTRAIT OF A LADY, BUST LENGTH, WEARING A RUFFLED COLLAR AND WHITE LACE BONNET

a pair, both oil on copper, ovals

coppers: the former: 2⅝ by 2 in.; 6.7 by 5.1 cm.; the latter: 2¾ by 2⅛ in.; 7 by 5.4 cm.

each framed: 3¾ by 3⅛ in.; 9.5 by 7.9 cm.

(2)

Both copper plates are flat and stable. There are no instabilities on the painted surfaces, though there is a very small pin dot of loss above the man's head. The images read well beneath a discolored varnish and still retain some good areas of detail in areas, such as in the lacework of the woman's hood. Inspection under UV reveals a thick varnish on both that impedes some inspection. There are some fine strokes of retouching in the costume and hair of the man, as well as a pin dot above his head. In the woman, there are some scattered old spots in her collar and possibly some old thin strokes of retouching in her face. The pair may benefit from a clean and a freshening of the varnish, but otherwise could hang as is. Both offered in octagonal carved darkwood framed with slightly worn gilt liners.
