NORTHERN NETHERLANDISH SCHOOL, 1596

PORTRAIT OF A LADY, PROBABLY FROM THE VAN HEKEREN FAMILY, SEATED THREE-QUARTER LENGTH, AGED 62

inscribed upper right: ÆTATIS·SVÆ ·62· ·1596·

oil on panel

panel: 42½ by 34 in.; 108 by 86.4 cm.

framed: 48⅛ by 39⅜ in.; 122.2 by 100 cm.

Private collection, Amsterdam, since circa 1920;

Thence by descent.

The right half of the coat of arms suggests that the sitter was from the Van Hekeren family on her maiden side. The left half indicates that she joined either the Montfoort family or Van der Hout families through marriage. Her identity is not secured since any records linking these families have yet been found.

We are grateful to Nadja Garthoff and Sabine Craft-Giepmans for their assistance with the cataloguing of this painting on the basis of photographs.
