Condition report

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

This work has a good lining which is providing an attractive surface. The work is more or less clean, and there has been no noticeable discoloration to the paint.

The condition is extremely good throughout the vessels and in the darker colors of the water, foreground and landscape. There are retouches applied across the bottom edge, some of which enter the picture by about 1 ½ inches, but otherwise there are only a few isolated spots in the foreground.

Retouches are numerous in the blue areas of the painting. Some thinness has developed in this color, which is not uncommon for works on canvas from this period, and some weakness and loss has also occurred, most of which is concentrated in the upper left.

Retouches are fewer in the clouds. There are retouches to numerous small isolated losses and a few cracks in the center of the left side of the sky in the dark cloud here, but the condition is very good in the lower left sky. There is a group of restorations in the dark cloud near the center of the work, running down to the hanging flag in the center. There is another small group in the dark clouds in the upper center. A vertical stretcher mark in the dark clouds in the upper center has also been retouched. There are two fairly large restored losses in the center of the right side. The condition is good in the clouds further to the right, with only a cluster of retouches around the masts of the boat on the right and in the lower right sky.

While some of the retouches could be corrected, the work can otherwise be hung as is.

Catalogue note

This large maritime vista is inspired by the works of Jan van de Cappelle (1626-1679) and Lieve Verschuier (1627-1686), two great 17th century Dutch Golden Age artists. The atmospheric clouds and calm water seen here stylistically relate to a canvas by Van de Cappelle in the Mauritshuis, The Hague.1
