CIRCLE OF PAOLO PORPORA

FOREST FLOOR WITH SNAKES, MUSHROOMS AND LADYBUGS

oil on paper, laid down on board, unframed

board: 11 by 16 in.; 27.9 by 40.6 cm.

Private collection, New York, 20th century;

From where acquired.

Although a label on the reverse indicates this small forest floor still life was previously attributed to Otto Marseus van Schrieck, it has more in common with the theatrical compositions of Italian artist Paolo Porpora. It may be a study for a larger work, as it is painted on paper and the background is loosely painted.

We are grateful to Dr. Fred Meijer for suggesting an attribution to the Circle of Paolo Porpora after firsthand inspection.
