Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's Olympia, 12 October 2005, lot 69 (as attributed to William Etty);
With The Maas Gallery, London, where acquired.
The head of the right-hand woman in this painting, which beautifully demonstrates the 'lustre, beauty and fleshliness' for which Etty was celebrated, is very close to that of the single figure in Somnolency (Aberdeen Art Gallery),1 exhibited by Etty at the Royal Academy in 1838 (no. 490), although with lighting in the reverse direction. It seems likely that the same model was used for both paintings, which would also suggest an approximate date for the present work.
