With Simon Carter Gallery;

From whom acquired in the early 1970s by the father of the present owner.

Smaller versions of these two paintings are at Shugborough Hall (National Trust), where they are described as Corsican Goats.1 However, the large horned Corsican Rams that resemble those depicted in these paintings are a hybrid between Mouflon and Barbados Black Belly sheep, first introduced in Texas in the early 20th century. It is more likely that these are prize domestic sheep bred in Britain, where new agricultural techniques and improved animal husbandry were driving a boom in competitive livestock breeding in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
