This composition echoes the design of Domenico Puligo’s painting offered in these Rooms on 6 July 2017, lot 140.1 In the present interpretation of the subject, Macchietti has changed several of the background figures while retaining the Noli Me Tangere, and has added an elegant curtain and tree upper left to anchor the design. Puligo’s characteristic sfumato effect has been replaced here with a more direct and elegant light.
