The canvas has a firm relining, the paint surface is clean, and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals small, pin-prick retouchings scattered through the man's face, brown jerkin, collar and sleeve. There are more concentrated and extensive areas of retouching throughout the background, to a horizontal line through his hat and it's feathers approx. 40cm. long, and to a vertical line which runs intermittently from the upper margin through the white feather, the wine flask, and his hand. None of these impede the legibility of the image and the painting is ready to hang in its current state without a need for further intervention.
