C.G. Marcus, 'Otto Marseus van Schrieck et les peintres de reptiles, insectes et sous-bois', in Art et Curiosité, August–September 1974, p. 88, reproduced fig. 14.
This canvas relates to Nicolaes de Vree's Statue in a park in the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg (inv. no. ГЭ-1028).1 The still life depicted in the left of the Hermitage picture is remarkably similar to the present composition, with the dark, bosky atmosphere punctuated with bursts of colour, in the form of the flowers and butterflies. This painting also exhibits the influence of artists such as Abraham Jansz. Begeyn and Otto Marseus van Schrieck.
