Martín Gómez the Elder was a close follower of Fernando Yañez de Almedina, to whom this painting was formerly attributed. His production is documented in Cuenca, where he worked on numerous commissions to decorate the interior of the cathedral in about 1552–74.1


We are grateful to Dr. Fernando Benito Doménech who, on the basis of digital images, endorsed the attribution to Martín Gómez the Elder when the painting was last on the market.
