The panel is formed of two horizontal planks, supported by block battens on the reverse. The paint surface is relatively clean, with a slightly discoloured varnish. Retouching is visible along the aforementioned join. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms this, and reveals that it is most concentrated in the left half of the composition. There are also small retouchings scattered in the background, with more concentrated areas, centre left, in the edge of the curtain, and between the frame and bed, centre right. There are sparsely scattered spot retouchings in all the figures, with slightly more concentrated areas in the figure of the maid, lower left, and in the shadows beneath the cello, lower right. The painting is in overall good condition.
