The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is very slightly discoloured. There is a small damage to the canvas edge on the upper margin, left of centre. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals very few, scattered minor spot retouchings, with slightly more concentrated retouching along the horizon, and just above this in the sky, centre left. There is also some wash retouching scattered in the sky, most notably on the left-hand side. In overall very good condition.

This painting is based on a design in the work formerly with Bellesi, London,1 itself replicating a design by Canaletto in the canvas formerly in the Albertini collection, Rome.2 The present composition, and that in the Bellesi painting, differ from Canaletto's design in the staffage, viewpoint (which is expanded here to include the campanile of San Giorgio Maggiore), and in the inclusion of several more canvas booths on the quay in the foreground, in addition to circular tents before the Public Granaries beyond.
