M. Chanlaire,
acquired from him by exchange by the Marquis Charles-Philippe de Chennevières (1820-1899), Paris (L.2073),
his sale, Paris, Roblin, 4-7 April 1900, possibly part of lot 85 (Un ange agenouillé en prière au milieu d'un paysage),
purchased at the above sale by the grandfather of the late owner
L.-A. Prat, with L. Lhinares, La collection Chennevières, Quatre siècles de dessins français, Paris 2007, pp. 546-547, no. 1304
This large and impressive red chalk study of an angel kneeling in a landscape was sold in the Chennevières sale (see Provenance) together with 28 other drawings given to Cochin, described as sujets pour illustrations de L'Iconologie; Terence, de Bellay, La Jerusalem Delivree 29 dessins au crayon.
Stylistically, this sheet is quite different to Cochin's typical designs for illustrations, which are more precisely rendered and often have accompanying text that alludes to the particular poem or publication illustrated. The present drawing, in contract, is freely executed and has a more painterly feel.
Nicolas Cochin was admitted to the Academy in 1751 and became Keeper of the King's drawings in 1752. He is renowned for his illustrations to La Fontaine's Fables and for the engravings of the fêtes staged by Louis XV.
