The canvas is lined, the paint surface is relatively clean, and the varnish is clear and even. The dark ground on which it is based, is apparent throughout. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals small retouchings scattered fairly sparsely throughout the background. There are also small retouchings through the figure's flesh tones, most concentrated around her nose, and in parts of her chest; and there are pinprick retouchings scattered in her white garments as well. There also appears to be some restoration to a small area, approx. 3 x 2 cm., and to a short vertical line, in the background just to the right of the sultana's leg. There is a line of strengthening along the lower edge of the window, and also some strengthening to the shadows in the sitter's drapery, around her elbow, right. The painting is in overall good condition.
