Master of the Aeneid

French, Limoges, circa 1530

Plaque with Aeneas and the Cumaean Sibyl

partially gilt painted enamel on copper, within a later wood frame

enamel: 22.5 by 20cm., 8 7/8 by 7 7/8 in.

Overall the condition of the enamel is very good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is a percussion point to the enamel at centre of the bottom edge; there is a small loss to the counter enamel and a corresponding small patch of restoration to the front (comprising two small rocks in the scene). There is a small area of warping to the upper edge at the centre; there appears to be a small restoration to the inscription on the banner, which is consequently partially legible. There is a small patch of restoration to the sky to the right of the aforementioned banner. There are a few patches of dryness or cloudiness to the surface, including to the area around the titular banner ‘ENEAS’ by Aeneas’ outstretched left hand. There is some very minor stable craquelure to the enamel consistent with the material, including to the rocks and ship.

The gilding is generally in very good condition. There are some small areas of ghosting to the gilding.

The reverse of the plaque: The reverse has a golden colour. There is some minor warping to the edges of the enamel. There is minor craquelure to the counter-enamel, consistent with the material.
