Pair of Reliefs with the Adoration of the Shepherds and Christ Carrying the Cross
painted terracotta, in gilt wood frames
reliefs: 61 by 102cm., 24 by 40 1/8 in.
frames: 81 by 120cm., 32 by 47 1/4 in.
The reliefs have recently undergone sensitive treatment by a professional conservator. A layer of surface dirt was removed and cracks in the composition were filled in. The restored cracks include one running above the scene with Christ and the soldiers, and one running through the architecture in the Adoration, as well as between the bull/peasant and the amorous couple on the right. Some areas of loss have been retouched, including the bull's horns and the accompanying peasant's head.
Otherwise the reliefs are in their previous condition, which is good overall, with some wear and remaining dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is an apparently original slip of paint to the terracotta surface throughout. There are a few traces of gilding in areas, notably to the horsemen. There are a few losses, including:
Adoration: the proper right hand and basket of the woman in the couple on the far right; the bull's horns.
Christ Carrying Cross: the proper right arm of the soldier on the right of the cross scene; the weapon of the horseman at the front and his horse's ears (where there is some old retouching).
There are several small chips to the reliefs, as well as very minor areas where the paint has flaked or chipped, revealing the terracotta colour underneath. The crack running through the bottom of Christ's cross is open but stable. There are several further stable hairline cracks in the terracotta, consistent with the material.
There is wear to the gilt wood frames, including visible and slightly open original joints. These are more prominent in the Christ carrying the Cross relief, where there is also a loss to the frame. There is a dark varnish(?) at the bottom of the frame of the Adoration relief and brown paint to the bottom edge of the other frame. Further general wear to the frames, including minor evidence of non-active worming and wear to the gilding and minor chips and losses. There is a metal hook for hanging at the top of each frame.
