The canvas is lined, and the paint surface is clean with a clear varnish. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouchings and strengthening in the sky and clouds. There are a few more concentrated patches: around the furthest left cloud and in the horizon lower left; in the cloud just above the sails centre right; along the right margin; to a small restored damage in the left of the main ship approx. 2 x 3.5 cm.; and to a few retouched horizontal surface scratches in the lowest left sail. Otherwise the ships appear free of intervention. The aforementioned intervention is largely cosmetic, and sensitively executed. The painting is in overall good condition, presents well and is ready to hang as is.
