The original panel is flat and stable and appears to be set in an engaged frame with a backing panel on the reverse. There is a small loss in the centre of the left-hand margin caused by an area of tenting and flaking which should be stabilised. Two vertical cracks in the panel and frame are visible, the longest running from the centre of the lower margin diagonally up into the word 'GRATIA' in the banner; the other running down from the upper right corner into the Virgin's left hand. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by an almost entirely opaque varnish. It is just possible to discern some small retouchings in the face, necks and hands of both figures, and to a small spot in Gabriel's leg. It would seem likely that there is further intervention present but there appear to be no major damages. In overall fair condition.
