C. Lawrence, Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde (1638-1698): Haarlem Cityscape Painter, Doornspijk 1991, p. 40, cat. no. 53b (as circa 1675).
Gerrit Berckheyde depicted the exterior of St Bavo's on a number of occasions. His views of the church's interior, however, are much more scarce, and reveal the influence of his older brother, Job. Lawrence (see Literature) points out that it is significant that Gerrit's interiors date from the later 1660s through the mid-1670s, the period when Job was most active as an architectural painter.
One of the mourning boards on the column in the present work is identifiable as referring to a female member of the Bam family, from Haarlem. We are grateful to Guus van Breugel, from the Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie, for his assistance in the cataloguing of this lot.
