The canvas is lined and the paint surface is dirty, with a discoloured varnish. There is evidence of wear throughout the canvas, as well as some more distinct craquelure, with some flaking and associated paint losses in the background above Saint Lawrence's arm. There are distinct stretcher marks with associated visible retouching across the centre of the canvas and along the margins. There are also areas of old discoloured retouching visible through each of the figures' flesh tones, and scuff marks and some small repaired damages scattered in the background. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms all this and reveals the extent of retouching along the margins, as well as strengthening throughout most of the dark background in the centre, and the clothes, hair and beard of the leftmost figure. Otherwise the thick, opaque varnish does not reveal much more than what is visible to the naked eye. In overall fair condition.
