The canvas has a firm relining, the paint surface is slightly dirty, and the varnish is discoloured. There is some frame abrasion visible along all four margins. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the thick, milky varnish beneath which it is possible to discern small retouchings scattered throughout the background and in the foreground (particularly in the centre of the lower margin), with further pin-prick retouchings throughout Aesop's hair, beard and the shadows of his face, as well as through the darks of his clothing. Older restoration is more difficult to make out but there appear to be small retouchings to repaired damages in the figure's hands. The overall legibility of the image remains clear and the painting is in fairly good condition.

The design is known in many variants, of which the prime version is considered the painting in a private collection in New York, painted for Afán de Ribera, 3rd Duke of Alcalá (1583-1637), as one of a set of twelve philosophers from Antiquity, executed between 1629-31.1
