Condition Report

The paint surfaces are relatively clean, with a clear varnish. The gold backgrounds have been completely regilded, and there is repainting throughout. Technical analysis reveals that the remains of the original water gilding over a dark red clay lies underneath. The present gilding is oil gilding, which suggests a date of no earlier than the end of the nineteenth century, but it is likely much later than this. There is a degree of wear throughout, most notably in the blue pigments, which have been repainted for the most part. The bright blue robe of the crouching figure in the left hand panel, has been completely repainted, for example. Small discoloured retouchings are visible scattered throughout, notably in the central panel, along a vertical, restored split (just left of centre). Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms this, and further reveals the extent of retouching.

Catalogue Note

Significant areas of repainting, not to mention the regilded background, make a firm attribution for this triptych difficult to establish. Close comparison may be drawn, however, with the design found in Gaddi's panels depicting the Flagellation and Resurrection in San Miniato al Monte, Florence;1 and in several depictions of the Crucifixion, such as that in the Musée du Petit Palais, Avignon (inv. no. 20166).2
