The composition is inspired by Canaletto's View of Horse Guards in the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation.1 The artist has, however, updated Horse Guards to the new design built from Portland stone in the 1751-3, replacing the red-brick predecessor, as shown in Canaletto's original.
