The panel is uncradled, very slightly bowed and stable. The paint surface is quite clean and the varnish is clear and even. There are some minor surface scuff marks. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a very milky varnish. There are small, scattered retouchings in the sky upper centre, in the landscape upper right, in the foreground, and in Christ's robe and hair. More concentrated areas of retouching are in two small patches in the background upper right - the largest measuring 0.5 x 0.5 cm. These retouchings are sparsely scattered and the majority of the composition appears to remain largely untouched and in good condition.

Another version, slightly larger, and with only very minor differences in the foliage, today in the Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte, Dortmund, was published by Friedländer as by Isenbrandt (although as his note makes clear, he did not attempt to distinguish between Isenbrandt and his highly productive workshop).1 The figure grouping originates from a print by Martin Schöngauer.
