This painting derives, at least in part, from a large-scale engraving by Ivan Yeliakov based on Mikhail Ivanovich Makhayev’s drawing of 1753.1 The print is one of a series of twelve views of Saint Petersburg published in 1753 by Ivan Sokolov to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Saint Petersburg.

Another painting, apparently by the same hand as the author of the present work, of similar dimensions, and also deriving from a drawing by Makhayev, is in the State Hermitage, Saint Petersburg (inv. no. ЭРЖ-2238),2 suggesting that both works may once have formed part of a larger cycle comprising all twelve views.
