The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:
Biagio d'Antonio Madonna and Child Oil on panel, in modern gilt wood frame.
The panel is in a good state of preservation. There is some evidence of past worm damage and minor vertical fractures are visible. These visible fractures to the reverse are reflected in slight instability to the paint layer, where the paint is raised along vertical hairline ridges. The blue pigment in the sky has become thin over time, allowing the pale ground colour to show through. Mitigation of this with recent restoration has occurred. There is some slight thinness through the figures; overall they are in good preserved condition with only very small restored paint loss to the Madonna's hair. The original gilding to the halos is retained but has been slightly compromised in places, allowing the ground colour to show through. The fine details to the faces of the figures are intact and the mountainous river landscape on the right and the curved balustrade to the left are in a good preserved condition. Little tonal improvement would be gained from removal of the varnish.
