The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:
The original canvas is unlined. Two vertical canvas seams with unstable paint along them are visible to the left and right hand edges of the composition.
There is a small patched damage by Jupiter’s proper left heel.
A raised horizontal stretcher mark, with minor loss can be seen above Jupiter’s head, and horizontally through the middle of the composition.
The paint layer is slightly raised and there is some instability in places and the tacking edge has corroded.
The paint layer is in an original and untouched state. The paint texture and impasted highlights are in an excellent preserved condition.
Minor dark naturally occurring shrinkage craquelure is evident and is slightly exacerbated by the cupped paint surface.
Crude, mismatched restoration is visible to the loss above Jupiter’s head and along the extreme top and bottom edges.
A discoloured and degraded varnish covers the surface and it’s removal would significantly improve the overall tonality as well as reveal preserved chromatic values.
