The Madonna and Child with the infant Saint John the Baptist
oil on canvas
unframed: 97 x 74.5 cm.; 38 1/4 x 29 1/4 in.
framed: 113.6 x 91.7 cm.; 44 3/4 x 36 1/8 in.
The canvas is lined, and the paint surface is slightly dirty with a discoloured varnish. Some parts of the canvas appear slightly worn and there are small discoloured retouchings most notably in the background. The blue of the Madonna's drapery lower right appears abraded. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals numerous scattered retouchings, most concentrated along the lower and right margins, as well as scattered along the other edges. There are concentrated areas of fine retouchings in the Madonna's neck, around her left eye, and through the folds of her headdress, as well as to small patches in her forehead and cheek. Along with other small scattered retouchings in her drapery, there are numerous fine lines to the blues. There is a concentrated area of retouching around St John's profile, and a horizontal band of retouching through the rose lower left approx. 20 cm. long. These have been sensitively executed and the painting is ready to hang in its current state.
