Veneto Cretan School, 16th Century
The Madonna and Child
oil on panel, unframed
unframed: 25.4 x 19.2 cm.; 10 x 7 5/8 in.
The panel is uncradled and slightly bowed. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. Numerous small losses, some of which have been retouched are patently visible to the naked eye. The majority of the gilding has disappeared and is evident only around the silhouette of the Madonna and the edges. There is a superficial, vertical surface crack which runs from the centre of the upper margin into the Madonna's face. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the varnish which fluoresces opaquely, but it does not appear to reveal anything further to the intervention that is already visible to the naked eye. In overall fair condition.

The modelling technique, especially detectable in the Child's figure, indicates a Greek painter trained in the Byzantine tradition as practised on Crete. The artist was likely working in Venice and clearly shares the same interest in Venetian painting encountered in the work of late 15th and early 16th century Cretan painters such as Nikolaos Tzafouris or the Bizamanos brothers.
