oil on canvas

unframed: 102 x 80.5 cm.; 40 1/8 x 31 3/4 in.

framed: 114.9 x 96 cm.; 45 1/4 x 37 7/8 in.

The canvas is lined, the paint is slightly dirty, and the varnish is clear and even. In raking light it is possible to discern some retouchings scattered through the background to restored damages including to the two upper corners which appears to have been made up. There is a slight degree of wear visible in the dark background where the brown ground has started to become more visible. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the opaque varnish beneath which some older retouchings are visible, including to the aforementioned areas in the background, and to a diagonal line in the right-hand side of the fruit basket approx. 18 cm. long. Some more recent retouchings are found scattered in and around the sculpture of the child and in the background around the base of the vessel, as well as scattered in the shadows below the ledge lower left. There are also small retouchings scattered around the female figure at the top of the standing cup.
