Portrait of a lady by a fountain

oil on canvas

unframed: 125.9 x 101.3 cm.; 49 1/2 x 39 7/8 in.

framed: 145.8 x 122.7 cm.; 57 3/8 x 48 3/8 in.

The canvas has a firm relining, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouchings which fluoresce both lightly and darkly. Of the darker retouchings, the most significant include fine lines throughout the sitter's face and chest, to two small repaired tears in the sky upper left (the longer of which measures 5 x 4 cm.) and to a small damage in the foliage to her left measuring approx. 6 cm., and other small retouchings through her dress and cloak. Lighter retouchings appear scattered through the fountain lower left, and in the sitter's hair and landscape upper right. Despite these the painting presents well in its current state without a need for further intervention.
