Liberale da Verona
Verona circa 1445 - circa 1527
Madonna lactans
oil on poplar panel
unframed: 68.3 x 50.5 cm.; 26 7/8 x 19 7/8 in.
framed: 87.7 x 70.5 cm.; 34 1/2 x 27 3/4 in.
The panel is supported on the reverse with two horizontal battens. There is a vertical repaired split which runs the height of the panel about 1/3 of the way from the left margin through the faces of the Madonna and Child. There is a further, shorter split just to the left of this, with associated retouching also approx. 12 cm. long. The panel is otherwise flat, with a dirty paint surface and discoloured varnish. Discoloured retouchings are visible in the Madonna's hair, her chest and the upper part of her red dress, and scattered in the sky. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms all these, as well as revealing minor pin-prick retouchings in the Madonna's neck, around the Christ child's hair, and scattered in the Madonna's robes, but the opaque, milky varnish makes older intervention impossible to discern, though it seems likely that there was further historic intervention. In overall moderate condition.

The figural group in this composition exists in at least three other versions by Liberale da Verona: one in the Galleria della Biblioteca Capitolare, Verona,1 to which the present work corresponds most closely in its design; another recorded in the collection of R. Brenzoni, Verona; and one in a private collection, Milan, where the Madonna and Child are placed before a tabernacle.2
