Henrietta Maria Vernon Atherton was the daughter of Robert Vernon Atherton and Henrietta Maria Legh. She married Thomas Powys, 2nd Baron Lilford (1775-1825) on 5 December 1797 at Penwortham, Lancashire, and they had twelve children. The present painting dates to circa 1804 and shows the 2nd Lady Lilford with her two eldest children.
