The canvas has a firm relining, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish relatively clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals that an inch-wide strip has been added along the lower margin of the painting, and there is retouching along this and where it joins. There is also a diagonal section of retouching extending from the upper left corner to the right-hand margin, around 4 inches below the upper right corner, through the man's hair - possibly also denoting an addition. Otherwise there are scattered areas of retouching, none of which is longer than 2/3cm., most notably in the man's nose and beard, and along the left contour of his face. The painting presents well in its current state, without a need for further intervention.
