The canvas is unlined, and the paint surface is slightly dirty with a slightly discoloured varnish. There is quite a distinct network of craquelure including some more developed lines running through the figure's chest and proper left hand. There are also superficial scratch marks throughout. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals fine lines of retouching to the aforementioned more distinct lines of craquelure, as well as to a square area covering the left eye socket of the skull and the background beside it 10 x 10 cm., and a couple of other smaller patches in the upper left and right corners, including in his proper right should to a patch measuring 6 x 2 cm. Apparent knocks to the canvas are supported on the reverse with small canvas patches - just to the left of the skull, and in the figure's proper left leg.
