A sailing boat and man-o'-war in choppy waters

signed with monogram on the spar, lower left: LB

oil on canvas

unframed: 33.6 x 41.1 cm.; 13 1/4 x 16 1/4 in.

framed: 53.8 x 62.7 cm.; 21 1/8 x 24 5/8 in.

The canvas has a firm relining, the paint surface is slightly dirty, and the varnish slightly discoloured. There is some evidence of wear in the dark sea along the lower margin. There are also bands of retouching just less than an inch wide running the length of the left and right margins. Inspection under ultraviolet light is most entirely impeded by the opaque varnish. There are some tiny, fine lines of retouching visible in the ship on the right, a small area in the lower margin below this, and a small area in the upper left corner. Old retouching such as the aforementioned bands along the margins are very difficult to discern. In overall fairly good condition.
