This recently discovered kitchen scene is a rare work by Jan Fris and as such represents an important addition to the artist’s small extant œuvre of around fifteen paintings. Very little is known about the life of Jan Fris - the son of Gerrit, he was born in Amsterdam in circa 1627, marrying there in 1649, before gaining citizenship two years later. Dated 1654, the present painting is an early work by Fris and the only known composition by the artist to combine still-life and genre painting to create a kitchen scene.
