Eduard Hau was a Baltic German painter and printmaker who grew up in the German community in Tallinn. From 1830 until 1832, he studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts.  Hau produced a series of decorative interior portraits of rooms in the Winter Palace, the Peterhof Palace and various other Russian Royal residences. Hau's paintings of interiors were used as a guide when restoring the rooms of the Gatchina Palace, which was rebuilt after its destruction during World War II.
