Antwerp 1610 - 1690 Brussels

Dune Landscape with a Village

Black lead and grey wash

unframed: 198 by 304 mm

framed: 435 by 593 mm

Sir Bruce Ingram (L.1405a),
by whom gifted in 1951 to Michael Ingram (bears his collector's mark, not in Lugt),
by whose executors sold, London, Sotheby's, The Ingram Collection: Drawings and Watercolours from the Collection of the Late Michael Ingram, 8 December 2005, lot 18
This study is typical of Teniers' spontaneously drawn landscapes in black lead, although the extensive additional use of wash is unusual. Few of the artist's landscape drawings are clearly connected with his paintings, and there is no known picture incorporating the view seen here.  For further information on Teniers as a draughtsman, see M. Klinge. 'David Teniers der Jungere als Zeichner, Die Antwerpener Schaffenszeit (1633-1651)', Jaarboek van het koninklijke Museum voor schone Kunsten Antwerpen, Antwerp 1997, pp. 71-282.
