Two comparable roundels by van der Ulft of classical harbour scenes are in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (inv. nos. Q. 80 and Q. 82). As with this example, many of Van der Ulft's landscapes are Italianate, whether real views or capricci. Interestingly, it seems that the artist never in fact visited Italy, but based many of his drawings on those of Jan de Bisschop, the contents of whose studio Van der Ulft had access to after De Bisschop's death in 1671.  Nevertheless the atmospheric nature of this drawings is highly resonant of classical Italy.  See also lot 50.
