Cotman's only documented visit to Bristol was in June 1800 where he stayed with the Norton family, before traveling into Wales.

In circa 1808-10, he returned to the subject of this watercolour when he produced an oil entitled Ferry House at Bristol. This work is now in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh.
