Dr Bernhard Schnackenburg, from seeing an image at the time of the 2001 sale, kindly informed us that he believes this drawing belongs to a large group of similar figure studies which were initially drawn in black chalk (or black lead) by either Adriaen or Isack van Ostade, and later substantially reworked and washed by Dusart.1
