Gouache: Window mounted. Overall in good condition. There is a tiny hole in the upper left corner. Some minor losses and areas of rubbing around the edges of the sheet. There is a tiny nick near the lower right corner. There is a small area of discolouration in the upper left section of the sky. Otherwise the colours remain fresh and vibrant. Engraving: In very good condition. a few tiny fox marks at the right margin.

Alexandre Jean Noël was a marine and landscape painter and pupil of Israel Silvestre (see lot 23) and Joseph Vernet. After 1770 Noël divided his time between Spain and Portugal and continued to produce topographical views in oil, watercolour and gouache.
