Alexandre Jean Noël was a marine and landscape painter and pupil of Israel Silvestre (see lot 23) and Joseph Vernet. After 1770 Noël divided his time between Spain and Portugal and continued to produce topographical views in oil, watercolour and gouache.
The present lot is sold together with an engraving of the view in the same direction, with inscription: Vista Generale de Cadiz / Vue Générale de Cadix / General view of Cadiz
