Sotheby's London, Contemporary Art Day Auction, February 13, 2014, lot 202

In 1988, Rauschenberg was given the opportunity to work with Polaroid's biggest format camera (20x24 inch). Experimenting with the coating process that was required, Rauschenberg ended up creating his own process consisting in using a paintbrush to apply bleach to the surface of the prints. This had the effect of altering the appearance of certain areas, creating a multi-layered image that operates as both a literal depiction of its subject and an abstract riff upon it.

Like in his paintings and Silkscreen works, the artist was reacting against purist and absolute art by incorporating images from magazines or non-artistic materials and processes into his works.
