Nine letters signed ("G. Garibaldi"), to Rinaldo de Sterlich and others, Caprera, 1862-1882

to Pietro Vernetti, Major of Fresonara, near Alessandria (expressing condolences on the death of Carlo Rodi, "mio antico compagno d'armi"), the author Rinaldo de Sterlich, Marnini (requesting him to defend Francesco Salerno against "assassini della libertà"), [Enrico?] Piccini, Tozzani (about Ugo Bassi, a martyr of the Risorgimento) and to "miei cari amici e fratelli d'armi" (about the Mille), the texts in a number of secretarial hands,

9 pages, 4to and 8vo, 2 envelopes, postmarked, Caprera (Sardinia) and Signa (Florence), 23 February 1862 to 27 October 1876, a few small stains and tears at folds,

Garibaldi is the greatest hero of Italian unification and an icon of national independence and republican ideals everywhere--lauded as such by men as different as Lincoln, George Sand, Dickens, Engels and Che Guevara. Indeed, A.J.P. Taylor described him as "the only wholly admirable figure in modern history".

Of the Italian patriots mentioned in these letters, Carlo Rodi (1801-1861) was numbered (no.863) among Garibaldi's famous Mille, the "Thousand" volunteers of May 1860, whilst Ugo Bassi had been executed by the Austrians in Bologna in 1849.
