We are grateful to Gerard Hastings, author of the forthcoming Keith Vaughan: The Graphic Art, for his kind assistance with the cataloguing of the present work and the below note.
Vaughan’s economical use of colour and harmonized hues conjure up the atmosphere of a harbour in a small coastal village on a damp, autumnal day. Pen and ink is combined with lithographic crayon while characteristic, frothing textures contrast with opaque patches of colour. The imagery is suggested rather than described and consists of an interpenetration of boat forms, gable-ends, fishing nets, tackle and rigging – shapes, colours and textures which evoke the character, rather than the appearance, of a harbour scene.
