56 x 43 x 59 cm. (22 x 17 x 23 ⅛ in.)

Acquired directly from the artist

Born in 1956, at the outset of the American and British Pop art movements, Ravinder Reddy studied contemporary art at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda before moving to London to study at Goldsmiths College and the Royal College of Art. Here, he developed his much heralded sculptural style, a unique fusion between Western pop art sensibilities and Indian folkloric tradition. In a cultural time where the female body is a political site of contention between traditionalism and modernity, Reddy's iconic head sculptures re-appropriate both the sensual and the sacred. These heads are a reflection of young South Asian women in their riotous collision between Indian history and Indian present.
