The decorative scheme of this watch and its matching chatelaine reflect the wider influence of the renaissance revival on jewellery designs in the second half of the 19th century. During the early part of the 17th century, Limoges-style enamel had occasionally been used to decorate the cases of watches and a small number of examples survive to this day. For the present piece, the artist has chosen to paint the portraits of Marie de Medici (1575-1642) and her husband King Henry IV of France (1553-1610), thereby complimenting the period setting of the watch's design.
Tardy notes in his Dictionnaire des Horlogers Français that Jean Chambon was apprenticed in 1762 and Master in 1766. Chambon was recorded in Paris at the Rue de Poitou in 1772 and the Rue Mercier in 1778.
