A FINE GOLD AND ENAMEL SCALLOP-FORM CYLINDER WATCH MADE FOR THE TURKISH MARKET

• Movement: gilded, cylinder escapement, plain flat three-arm balance
• Dial: white enamel, Turkish numerals, outer minute ring, moon hands, signed in Arabic - Blondel & Melly, Geneva
• Case: gold, scallop-form, the back composed of alternating panels of pearls and polychrome enamel painted flowers against a pale opaque pink enamel ground, the inner back bezel decorated alternately with opaque pink and turquoise enamel panels heightened with enamel flowers, pendant decorated with turquoise enamel and white champlevé enamel flowers, pusher through pendant to release back, polished gold cuvette engraved with movement details &signed and numbered Blondel & Melly à Genève, back and cuvette numbered 14070, inside back stamped FM in oval cartouche

Blondel & Melly, active between c.1820-1850, are recorded in Geneva at Quai des Bergues 15 and later at the Rue Kléberg (see: Patrizzi, Dictionnaire des Horlogers Genevois, p.107). The firm specialised in decorative watches for the Turkish market, featuring cases set with enamels, pearls and diamonds.
